I have been thinking about different skies/times of day and how they affect the overall colour palette of an environment. In this first drawing, I was thinking about dawn lighting, where there is often the remnants of cool blue from the night sky in contrast to the warm yellow on the horizon of the rising sun. In the garden setting, I've tried to imagine that there is still a blue haze bouncing of the green of the grass and the shrubs. Then there is a yellow specular light around the tree and the other objects, coming from behind where the sun is rising. For a soft and magical feel, I used pink and purple tones to keep the scene from becoming too cold from the blue and green shades from the sky and plant life.
In my next garden sketch I tried out a different sky, which has given the scene an even softer feel. I'm also trying out different painting styles, as even though they are concept pieces I still want them to have an appeal. I know I still need to improve my digital painting skills, and I think with these paintings there is plenty of room for improvement. I am still trying to find a way to make my concepts look good, within the boundaries of my level of skill.
This is my first attempt at creating a concept for the cliffside ruins scene idea. What I was trying to convey is a sort of Mediterranean environment, where the earth is quite warm and dry and the sky is at it's bluest. I like the idea of having a nice contrast between the slight redness in the rocks and the bright blue of the sky and sea. Then there are the buildings which, as in the real world, are often white or light stone to reflect the sun's heat. I tried to show a little reflection of colour from both the sky and the rock on these buildings.
I think the style of this one needs a little more work, it still feels too 'digital' to me. So in my next drawings, I want to try to give them a more 'painted' appearance.
